SMN Stories: First Concert Ever Attended?

Written by Anneliese Herbosa, Content Manager of The Social Media Network 2013-14.

Every week, we’ll be asking our team questions about anything and everything, and we encourage you to chime in. We want you to get to know us. And we want to get to know you, too! Follow along with our weekly series: #SMNstories.

This week, we took a trip down memory lane travelled back in time to recall our first ever concert experiences. Here they are, in chronological order:

My first concert was no other than the Spice Girls! I was a huge fan then, and my parents definitely spoiled me by surprising me with awesome seats! I went with my dad and until now, we still tall about that night and how much fun we had being silly. (Vuitton)

Spice World Tour. August 8, 1998 in Tacoma. My sister was a huge fan and our whole family went down to Seattle for their world tour. To this day I rue the fact that they stole my concert virginity, and having to give this answer whenever I’m asked, “what was your first concert?” (Tony)

The Moffatts, because I won the tickets from a Walmart contest. I was still in elementary school. (Diana)

My first concert was Clay Aiken. I LOVED AND STILL LOVE him so much even though most people are surprised when I said he’s my first. He stole my concert virginity and I’m proud of it. My favourite memory of that night was when he sang ‘Merry Christmas With Love’ and gave me chills and goosebumps all over. Claymates forever! (Kirsty)

Anycall Concert, 2003, Kwangju, South Korea. It had a whole collaboration of huge K-pop stars at the time performing 1-2 of their hit songs. I was a huge BoA fan back then so when she came on, I lost my marbles. I still own all of her CDs up ’til 2007. (Mark)

Black Eyed Peas with Swollen Members and Rihanna at Rogers Arena, October 2006. My sister and her boyfriend took me, and it was when they released Monkey Business which was what I think is their best album. It’s kinda hilarious that Rihanna was still only an opener at that time. Hearing a band I loved playing live gave me such a high that I’ve been a concert junkie ever since. (Gracelle)

The very first concert I had ever been to was Mariah Carey in September 2006 at GM Place before it was Rogers Arena. I was 14 at the time and I thought it was the coolest thing! I unfortunately don’t have any photographic evidence, it was before the iPhone era… (Corinne)

A little late to the concert-going party… it was the summer of 2007 when I saw The Fray perform live at Deer Lake Park. The highlight of my night was when they did a rendition of Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie”. The roaring crowd just ate it up! It was awesome to the nth degree. (Anneliese)

Jason Mraz. Sept 30, 2009. Rogers Arena. I had floor seats and got so close to the stage that I could almost touch his hand. Loved the energy of the group even though we were bumping elbows. (Orane)

Coldplay, Viva La Vida tour, June 21, 2009, Rogers Arena. So damn talented, it was a really colourful energetic show. Highlight was when the band snuck into the crowd and performed “I’m a Believer” by the Monkees. (Parker)

[sad Korean drama music] Lady Gaga, 2010, Rogers Arena. I ended a week-long “bro-trip” early to surprise my (now-ex) girlfriend with two tickets to the concert. Personally, it wouldn’t be my first concert of choice but seeing her smile and watching tears roll down her cheeks at the same time made it definitely worth it.[/sad Korean drama music] (Ralph)

More recently…

My first concert was Bruno Mars few weeks back, and I came out sweaty, voiceless and crazed for more concerts. I will never EVER forget it. (Julia)

What a sheltered life I’ve lived so far… I actually have not been to a concert in my life. I suppose it’s mainly because of my preference to avoid crowded places and situations. If I HAD to be in a concert though, I would love to listen to Diana Panton singing a set from her “If the Moon Turns Green” album. It would probably have to be in a not-so-crowded setting as well… and enjoyed with a glass (or glasses) of wine. (Gerald)
